Think Twice: Why Social Media Brain Advice Can Be Misleading
Who do you seek when you need advice about your heart? Do you look here, on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter (or whatever we are calling it these days)?
Probably not. Yet, when it comes to our brain–arguably the most complex known system in the universe–many of us are content with sampling from the liberal amount of content dispensed by non-experts. Having spent most of my life as a scientist studying and teaching about the brain, I find this both fascinating and perplexing.
All manner of people, many with legitimate credentials in other vital areas of life (business, sales, health and wellness etc.), have the courage to offer up “facts” and to speak confidently as self-proclaimed brain experts.
Much of what I see is at best partial truth. Often it is metaphor passed off as fact, or a just plain wrong.
Be a savvy consumer. Stop rewarding pseudo-science. The brain is more than a marketing tool. Consider the source and don’t be afraid to question.
If in doubt, take the same approach that you would for questions about your heart, kidneys, accounting, or even your car–ask an expert!
